Lehigh and New England railroad remains. Mt. Bethel PA. Northampton County.
Hello friends. In this video we explore some fantastic remains of the L&NE railroad. We are in Mt. Bethel PA which is just a stone’s throw away from Portland PA. Here is a quick few lines from the book “History of the Lehigh and New England railroad company” The South Mountain and Boston Railroad Company, organized in autumn of 1872, confidently proclaimed itself to be the organization which would build the route between Harrisburg PA and Boston MA. The cumbersome corporate structure, arranged in compliance with current laws, had to be chartered individually and identified in each state where laws demanded it. Therefore, the officials designated trackage between Slatington PA and Harrisburg PA ad South Mountain railroad company, from Slatington to Portland PA and across New Jersey as the South Mountain and Boston railroad company, and in New York as the South Mountain and Boston railroad company of New York. Eventually the line would be built from Slatington PA to Campbell Hall NY. Its final name after many reconfigurations would be the Lehigh and New England railroad. Let’s go for a walk and I’ll tell you a little bit more. Thank you for watching. Filmed 6/20/26
