Thieves Lane: Shropshire’s Ghostly Roman Road

Welcome back to Britannia Unconsidered. Today I’m walking a quiet, straight section of Roman road near Cruckton in Shropshire, known locally as Thieves Lane. As I follow this ancient route, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on how the Romans didn’t always build from nothing. Just a few miles away at Sharpstone Hill near Bayston Hill, archaeologists uncovered a sophisticated Iron Age metalled road dating back to around 200 BC. Built in multiple phases with elder brushwood foundations, clay, and a surface of imported river cobbles from the Severn, it grew to over 7 metres wide with flanking ditches — impressive engineering by the Cornovii tribe long before the legions arrived. The Romans recognised its value and simply upgraded or overlaid sections of these much older British trackways as they expanded their network toward Wroxeter. Right here in Cruckton, only a short distance from this very lane, a small 2nd-century Roman villa once stood, complete with a hypocaust-heated room — a modest farmhouse that thrived thanks to its proximity to the road. Here about the strange sightings of Willo-the-wisp style procession at the Reabrook in Hanwood (a mode of conveyance for the Romans) for lead ore from the mines at Snailbeach and more. So as you join me on this walk, imagine ghostly Roman soldiers marching these same straight lines centuries ago, while beneath our feet lie the layered stories of Iron Age ingenuity and Roman pragmatism. Buckle up and I’ll see you out there. Music Karl Casey ‪@WhiteBatAudio‬
