This Town Lost Its Railway... Then It Came Back
Corwen is a small market town in the Dee Valley of North Wales, but unlike most towns that lost their railway during the Beeching era, Corwen's story didn't end with closure. In this episode of Lost Railway Towns, I explore the history of Corwen and its railways, from the arrival of the Denbigh, Ruthin and Corwen Railway in 1864 to the opening of the Ruabon to Barmouth route that connected the town with Bala, Dolgellau and the Welsh coast. Once an important railway junction, Corwen became another casualty of Britain's railway closures, losing its trains in 1964 following flood damage and the wider Beeching cuts. Today, traces of the old railway can still be found around the town, including surviving railway buildings, embankments and former trackbed. But Corwen is unusual. After decades without trains, the railway returned. I visit the modern Corwen station on the Llangollen Railway, discover how volunteers gradually rebuilt the line through the Dee Valley, and take a journey on one of Britain's most successful heritage railway extensions. From abandoned infrastructure to a working railway once again, Corwen offers a rare example of a lost railway town reconnecting with its past. If you enjoy railway history, industrial heritage, transport geography, heritage railways, disused railways, old stations and the changing landscape of Britain's transport network, I think you'll enjoy this one. Have you travelled on the Llangollen Railway, and do you know of any other towns that managed to get their railway back after closure? #Corwen #LlangollenRailway #LostRailwayTowns #RailwayHistory #HeritageRailway #BeechingCuts #DisusedRailways #NorthWales #TransportHistory ********* MERCH now available here - https://ko-fi.com/wobblyrunner/shop Become a channel member - https://www.youtube.com/wobblyrunner/...
