Montañas sagradas | Raúl Ferrero

Throughout history, great mountains have occupied a central place in the beliefs, myths, and spirituality of numerous civilizations. Understanding the symbolic and cultural significance of these sites is key not only to learning about past traditions but also to understanding the profound relationship that humankind has maintained with nature and the transcendent. The Ateneo Mercantil of Valencia invites you to attend a new session of the Great Enigmas of Humanity series, an initiative aimed at exploring some of the great symbols, mysteries, and traditions of human history with the help of experts in the field. In the lecture “Sacred Mountains,” writer, researcher, and popularizer Raúl Ferrero will address the role that certain mountains have played as spaces of spirituality, myth, and collective memory in different cultures around the world. Through a journey through some of the most emblematic sites on the planet, the session will show how these peaks were considered true living sanctuaries. Key questions will be explored: Why have certain mountains been considered sacred places since ancient times? What is the relationship between landscape, spirituality, and tradition? How have these peaks influenced the beliefs and legends of different civilizations? And, at the same time, why do they continue to inspire fascination and symbolize the search for the transcendent? The session will allow participants to understand the symbolic importance of sites linked to the mysticism of the Himalayas, Andean traditions, and the sacred narratives of Africa and Europe, showing how mountains have served as spaces of faith, inspiration, and cultural resistance throughout history. This lecture combines information, history, and reflection to discover how certain peaks have transcended their geographical dimension to become authentic spiritual and cultural symbols of humanity.
