Throughout the 20th century, major armed conflicts and totalitarian regimes generated episodes steeped in mystery, propaganda, and historical silences that continue to spark debate today. Understanding these processes is key not only to interpreting our recent past but also to reflecting on how historical narratives are constructed. The Ateneo Mercantil of Valencia invites you to attend a new session of the Great Enigmas of Humanity series, an initiative aimed at delving into some of history's most controversial episodes with the help of experts in the field. In the lecture "Hitler's 13 Burials and Other Stories," historian Javier Nicolás will address one of the most enigmatic episodes of the end of World War II: the fate of Adolf Hitler's remains after his death in April 1945. Based on historical documentation and Soviet investigations, the complex journey of his remains under the control of the Soviet Union will be analyzed. Key questions will be examined: What really happened to Hitler's body after his suicide in Berlin? Why did Joseph Stalin distrust the official version? What motivated the successive burials, exhumations, and relocations carried out over decades? And, at the same time, what implications did this process have on the construction of the historical narrative and the management of memory? This session will allow participants to understand the journey of the remains between 1945 and 1970, when they were buried and relocated multiple times by Soviet authorities, until their final cremation by the KGB and the scattering of their ashes in the Elbe River. This process reflects both the political control of memory and the fear of creating symbols. A lecture that combines historical rigor with accessible storytelling to shed light on one of the darkest, most controversial, and most fascinating episodes of the 20th century.
