Amelia de Portugal: Perdió a Su Esposo y a Su Hijo… y Después También Perdió Su Reino

Amélie of Orléans was the last queen of Portugal, and also one of the most tragic figures in European royalty. The world remembers her as a tall, elegant, and admired sovereign, the French woman who fell in love with a country that wasn't her own and who founded hospitals for the poorest while reigning on one of the oldest thrones in Europe. But behind that image of a serene queen hid a woman from whom fate snatched away, one by one, all those she loved. A woman born in exile, heir to a crown that had already fallen, and who ended her days completely alone in a castle in France, after burying her husband and two sons. Raised to be a queen and prepared, from childhood, for the fall of thrones, Amélie gave everything for Portugal. She filled her reign with charitable works, fought against tuberculosis, and won the affection of the people. And that same woman, one afternoon in February 1908, ended up standing in an open carriage, watching her husband and eldest son being murdered before her very eyes, defending herself against the killers with the only thing she had in her hands: a bouquet of flowers. In this story you will discover her birth in exile in England as heir to a French crown that had collapsed in 1848, her childhood among castles and the early certainty that thrones fall, the portrait that captivated Prince Charles and their meeting in Chantilly, the fairytale wedding in Lisbon and her immediate love for Portugal, her accession to the throne in 1889 and the birth of her children, the daughter she lost at birth, her hospitals and sanatoriums and her fight against tuberculosis, the infidelities of an oceanographer and painter husband, the bankruptcy of 1892 and the humiliating British Ultimatum of 1890, the dictatorship of João Franco and the scandal of the secret advances that ignited republican hatred, the assassination attempt of February 1, 1908, at the Terreiro do Paço, the king and heir being murdered and the queen striking the assassin with her bouquet of flowers to save her youngest son, and the proclamation of Manuel II at the age of eighteen And Amelia, the power behind the throne; the 1910 revolution that ended nearly eight hundred years of monarchy; the nighttime escape by sea and the long exile in France; the death of her last child in the same English village where she was born; her solitude as the last surviving member of the family; her single, poignant return to Portugal in 1945; her death in 1951 and her final words pleading to go home; and the state funeral with which Portugal finally bid farewell to its last queen. A story of splendor, love, grief, and unwavering dignity: that of a woman who lost absolutely everything—her husband, her two children, the throne, her country—and yet remained steadfast until the very end. The hidden life of the last queen of Portugal, the foreign queen who loved her country more than many of her own people, and who today finally rests alongside her family in the royal pantheon in Lisbon. 📖 Based on true historical events.
