Britain's Richest Duke Kept Coco Chanel As His Mistress. He Begged. She Ruined Him: Bendor Grosvenor
He owned the freehold of half of Mayfair and Belgravia, a Cheshire palace with 54 bedrooms, more than 130,000 acres, two ocean-going yachts and half a million acres of hunting ground in France. By most reckonings Hugh "Bendor" Grosvenor, the 2nd Duke of Westminster, was the richest man in Britain. For roughly 6 years, from 1924 to 1930, he courted Coco Chanel with ropes of natural pearls, loose emeralds, a Renoir and a hilltop on the Riviera, and he asked her, more than once, to become his duchess. The laundrywoman's daughter who built her own empire said no every single time. He would die in 1953 leaving a record death duty of around £18 million, four marriages, and no surviving son to carry his name. Subscribe to the channel: @OpulentAffairs In this video, we talk about the affair the richest man in Britain could not turn into a marriage, including the boy named after a racehorse, the fortune built on London ground rent, the four-year-old heir whose death haunted the dukedom, Chanel's rise from a convent orphanage to a global perfume fortune, the cruises aboard the Flying Cloud, the building of Villa La Pausa, the proposals and the refusals, the contested "only one Chanel" quote, the rebound marriage to Loelia Ponsonby with Winston Churchill as best man, the duke's dark political decline, and the empty cradle that ended his direct line.
