Fascia Anatomy 101 - Fascia Layers
In this video, Jill Miller describes the different types of fascia; superficial, intermediate and deep fascia as well as myofascia. Superficial fascia lies directly underneath your skin and can be located by pinching the skin and feeling the layer just beneath. Superficial fascia feels different depending on where you grab your skin, like forearm vs. glutes. The fibers of the deepest layer, called deep fascia are more organized and therefore thicker and tougher than superficial fascia. Think IT Band (outer upper leg) or thoracolumbar fascia (lower back). The intermediate fascia can be found by pinching your superficial fascia and sliding it up, down, side to side. That surface your sliding over is your intermediate fascia. Your myofascia (muscle cells + fascia), has many layers with each individual muscle cell covered in its own fascia, eventually blending together with multiple layers of fascia running in between, through out and on top to finally reveal a myofascial structure!
