Inside Homelessness: A Working Man’s Life on the Streets of Phoenix- Syrus 44

At 44 years old, Syrus is currently homeless on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona. Despite losing his bike, having his phone stolen, losing his wallet, and even returning to his camp to find everything he owned gone, he continues to work and fight to get back on his feet. Unlike many people assume about homelessness, Syrus holds a job, maintains a gym membership so he can shower, and rents a storage unit to keep his belongings safe. He says he knew weeks in advance that he was headed toward homelessness and understands that without keeping a job, it would be nearly impossible to escape life on the streets. Syrus shares how a series of bad decisions and burned relationships ultimately led him here. Once a homeowner, he sold his house in 2014 to purchase an indoor soccer team, a decision that would change the course of his life. Today, his goal is simple: save $1,500 and secure housing again. Throughout his struggles, Syrus credits his sister for never giving up on him and continuing to believe he can turn things around. He hopes others facing similar situations won't be afraid to ask for help before it's too late. His message is simple: people experiencing homelessness still need kindness, respect, a smile, and someone willing to say hello.
