Tami’s Birthday on the Streets: Jail, Homelessness & a Call From Her Dad
Tami shares that it is her birthday and that one of the highlights of her day was getting the opportunity to speak with her father, something that brought a smile to her face during an extremely difficult time. She opens up about still being homeless, sleeping beside a dumpster, having her phone stolen, and spending the night in jail on her birthday. As the conversation continues, Tami reflects on her childhood, explaining that she grew up in a middle-class Mormon family where drugs and alcohol were never part of her home. She shares how her parents' divorce when she was 14 led to traumatic events that resulted in a brief stay in CPS, an experience she describes as frightening and life-changing. Tami becomes emotional as she talks about wanting to enter detox and begin turning her life around, but she hopes to do so alongside her boyfriend Brian and their dog. She explains how difficult it is to survive on the streets and says that all she wants is a safe place with a bed and a bathroom. Her ultimate goal is to return home to Oregon and spend meaningful time with her parents. Brian shares his perspective on life outdoors, explaining that having a partner is essential for safety and survival. He also makes the surprising admission that he enjoys living on the streets and would not want to change his lifestyle.
