The largest Japanese maple we've ever pruned. Take a look at how we study a tree.
This is the largest maple we have pruned using our techniques. It took the two of us (Robert and Nolan) a total of 9 hours to complete. The owner has pruned it back slightly by removing dead branches and cutting off lower branches, but it's never been pruned by bonsai professionals. This tree has HUGE potential. There are so many maple trees planted in the front yard here in the PNW and most of them look like a giant mushroomS. Some people prefer it this way and that's fine if that's what you like. In the art of Niwaki pruning or garden tree pruning, the philosophy is that a bird should be able to fly into the tree and perch on the branches. This will create a safe haven for local birds and will bring wonderful songbirds to your yard. Birds can't fly into mushroom trees. Sunlight doesn't penetrate mushroom trees and it will cause a bunch of dead branches on the inside. Mushroom trees will block your sight lines. This is why we believe a properly pruned tree will result in a more magnificent and healthier look. Niwaki pruning takes years if not decades to reach its full potential. Creating layers and branch ramifications cannot be done with a single prune. What you see in this video is simply year one and we've already transformed it dramatically. Just imagine what it can look like 10, 15, or 20 years from now.
