We last pruned this maple in fall of 2023 and had been designing it for about 5 years. It was really coming together, but sometime in 2024, a landscaper took a hedge trimmer and mushroom'd our work. The landscaper also flattened the tree and turned it into a pancake. So in this video, we had to pretty much start from zero and open up the tree and see what can be trained. What was supposed to be a two hour ramification refinement session turned into a five hour structural re-design. We were debating wether or not to post this video because the before and after doesn't really showcase a drastic transformation. This tree needs a lot of work to recover from it being mushroomed. But we had already filmed it and we think it's important to show what ONE bad pruning can do to a tree. When you take a hedge trimmer to a maple, you're giving it thousands of random cuts and it causes it to back bud like crazy and kill off a number of branches. The ramifications that we had spent five years training started to lose its structure and movement and is now criss crossing all over the place. The tree will end up prioritizing new growths and because of that, certain branches that we had spent years training ended up dying off.
