Absurd formed in the early 1990s in Thuringia, Germany. Its members were teenagers influenced by the first wave of European black metal (bands like Venom and Bathory), but also by extremist ideas. From the beginning, Absurd sought not only to make music, but also to provoke, break boundaries, and build an identity based on darkness, antisocial behavior, and radicalism. In 1993, an event occurred that forever marked the band's history: the murder of Sandro Beyer. The members of Absurd, including Möbus, brutally murdered him. The crime was not motivated by a "deep ideological" ideology, as is sometimes claimed, but rather by personal conflicts, extreme immaturity, and a violent mentality. They were arrested and convicted, but because they were minors, they served relatively short sentences. This event turned Absurd into a band shrouded in notoriety and morbid fascination within the underground scene. 🕯️ The Birth of the Dark Myth While in prison, their music began circulating in the underground. Their best-known demo, Thuringian Pagan Madness, became almost legendary within certain circles. Here, something key happened: the band went from being a fringe group to becoming a symbol within a segment of black metal that sought the extreme, not only musically, but ideologically. After his release from prison, Möbus became even more extreme in his stances. He became involved with neo-Nazi movements and openly promoted nationalist and racist ideas. It was no longer just music: it was a mixture of ideology, propaganda, and dark aesthetics. This led him to become a central figure within what would later be called NSBM (New Socialist Black Metal). NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) didn't emerge in a single moment, but rather from an evolution within black metal: 1. Roots in the Rebellion of Black Metal Original black metal (especially in Norway) was already anti-religious, anti-establishment, and provocative. Bands like Mayhem and Burzum pushed boundaries, although not all of them had a clear political ideology. In Germany and Eastern Europe, some musicians began to blend this sound with nationalist ideas, radical paganism, and neo-Nazism.
