LA HISTORIA DE MAYHEM Y EL ORIGEN DEL BLACK METAL EN EL MUNDO /DOCUMENTAL

Over the years, we've read stories about musicians and artists that sometimes surpass fiction. However, what happened in the late 80s and 90s in the Norwegian black metal movement is something that not even the best Hollywood screenwriters could have imagined. Why do we say this? Well, many things happened around one of the genre's pioneering bands, Mayhem, that will leave you speechless. In 1984, three young men from Oslo, Norway, decided to get together to form a band, motivated by their love for Venom—a precursor to what many would later know as black metal. They were Jørn, Kjetil, and Øystein, who later changed their names to Necrobutcher, Manheim, and Euronymous, and after several rehearsals, they named their group Mayhem (in homage to a song by their favorite band, "Mayhem with Mercy"). In their early days, they played covers of Venom, Motörhead, and Black Sabbath. But as time went on and they practiced, they began to lay the foundations of what would later be known as black metal: fast, brutally loud songs influenced by hardcore punk. Even though they hadn't recorded a single track, they gradually made a name for themselves in the Norwegian underground. A vocalist who worshipped death The initial Mayhem lineup didn't last long. Of the three young men, only Euronymous remained as the leader and guitarist, and Necrobutcher on bass. However, after numerous changes, the lineup solidified four years later with the arrival of Jan Axel Blomberg—known as Hellhammer—and, above all, with the addition of a very peculiar young Swede, Per Yngve Ohlin, who called himself Dead. His nickname wasn't just for show. At age 10, Dead was in an accident where he was briefly presumed dead, but doctors managed to revive him almost immediately. From that moment on, the young man was never the same, developing a strange fascination with death that even influenced his music. In the song "Freezing Moon," he described his near-death experience. Although Dead was already playing with a band in his native Sweden, as the vocalist for Morbid, he decided to move from Stockholm to Oslo to become the new frontman of Mayhem. According to the band members, to prove himself and show them what he was capable of, he sent them an envelope containing a cassette tape, a decomposing mouse, and a letter in which he wrote that he wanted to play with them because he didn't see a future for his current band. The performances with him were unique, becoming a true spectacle. It's said that at concerts—besides seeing pig heads and impaled sheep—Dead was capable of cutting himself with glass and injuring himself live with whatever he could get his hands on. Furthermore, some say he buried his clothes in a cemetery and carried a bag with a dead crow, which he would smell before concerts to experience the stench of death. The dark history behind Mayhem, the pioneering black metal band With Dead's arrival, Mayhem raised the bar for black metal/Photo: Special But it wasn't all wonderful, as things sometimes got out of control for Dead. In 1990, Mayhem participated in the Support for Slayer Magazine festival alongside Equinox and Cadaver, and during that performance, they had to end their set early to take their vocalist to the hospital because he had cut himself so deeply that he was on the verge of bleeding to death on stage. That's how extreme their shows were. On August 10, 1993, Varg traveled to Oslo with Snorre Ruch, founder of the band Thorns, to confront Euronymous. According to Vikernes, he had learned that Øystein was planning to kill him, or at least that's what he had told several people in the Inner Circle (the group he led, which included the main Norwegian black metal bands), that he wanted to record him while torturing and ultimately killing him.
