The story of David Parland, better known as Blackmoon, is one of the darkest and most symbolic within Swedish black metal. Born in 1970 in Sweden, he displayed a deep fascination with the occult, death, and Satanism from a young age. Unlike many musicians who adopted these ideas as an aesthetic, in his case they became something much more personal and obsessive. His mind was marked by internal conflicts, depression, and a constant attraction to the dark. Before achieving notoriety, he was part of the band Necrophobic, where he played guitar and participated in the creation of the album The Nocturnal Silence (1993), a key work of Swedish death metal with already quite dark and occult undertones. However, for Parland, death metal wasn't enough… he wanted something more extreme, colder, closer to his beliefs. It was then, in 1993, that he founded the band Dark Funeral with Mikael Svanberg (Lord Ahriman). They shared a vision: to create pure, violent, satanic, and uncompromising black metal. They weren't seeking fame, but rather to channel hatred, darkness, and an extreme anti-Christian ideology. In 1994, they released their self-titled debut EP, Dark Funeral, where their style was already defined: fast riffs, malevolent atmospheres, and aggressive playing. But the pinnacle of Blackmoon's involvement came with the album The Secrets of the Black Arts (1996), considered one of the most representative albums of Swedish black metal. On that album, his guitar conveys an almost ritualistic feel, as if he were truly trying to invoke something beyond the human realm. However, behind that music was an increasingly unstable mind. Blackmoon wasn't just a musician; he was someone being consumed by his own beliefs. His personal problems, isolation, and obsession with Satanism gradually distanced him even from the band. Finally, he left Dark Funeral in the late 1990s. After his departure, his life became more erratic. He participated in other minor projects, but never again achieved the impact he had with Dark Funeral. He lived an increasingly isolated life, struggling with deep psychological problems and a constant inner conflict. His end came on March 22, 2013, in Stockholm. David Parland was found dead in his apartment. The cause was suicide. His death closed a story marked by real, not just aesthetic, darkness. Unlike many within black metal, Blackmoon didn't play with the concept: he lived it. And that, in his case, ultimately consumed him. Today, his legacy lives on primarily through The Secrets of the Black Arts, an album that many consider almost a manifesto of the purest and most orthodox black metal.
