John Moses Browning: The Man Who Held 128 Patents and Never Built a Factory

John Moses Browning held 128 firearms patents. He never built a factory. He never managed a production line. He never employed a workforce beyond a small machine shop in Ogden, Utah. Winchester manufactured his rifles. Colt manufactured his pistols. Remington manufactured his shotguns. FN manufactured his Auto-5 and Hi-Power. Every major American and European firearms brand of the 20th century was built partly on his designs — and he owned none of the factories that produced them. Between 1883 and 1902, Winchester purchased over 44 Browning designs. Many were never produced. Winchester bought them to prevent competitors from having them. For nearly 20 years, Winchester did not produce a single gun of its own invention — and held 75% of the American sporting arms market on the strength of one man's patents. Then Browning asked for royalties instead of a flat fee. Winchester refused. Browning walked out. He took the Auto-5 to FN in Belgium. He gave Colt the M1911. He designed the BAR, the M2 .50 cal, and the machine guns that armed two World Wars. Winchester went bankrupt in 1931. The M1911 remained the U.S. military standard sidearm for 74 years. The M2 machine gun has been in continuous service for over a century. The designs outlasted every company that manufactured them. The patents expired. The principles never did. This is the story of what happens when engineering genius and manufacturing capacity are separated — and what happened to an entire industry when the genius died in 1926 and the patents started expiring. — šŸ“Œ Sources & further reading: Nathan Gorenstein, "The Guns of John Moses Browning" (2021) Britannica: John Moses Browning biography NRA National Firearms Museum archives American Rifleman: "Browning Auto-5: The First Successful Semi-Auto Shotgun" Military Times: "A Century of the Ma Deuce" (2026) The Firearm Blog: "The Greatest Blunder in Commercial Firearms History" — šŸ”” Subscribe for deep dives into the companies, engineers, and corporate decisions behind the tools that built the modern world. #Browning #JohnMosesBrowning #Winchester #Colt #FN #M1911 #Firearms #Engineering #Patents #IndustrialHistory #M2MachineGun #Auto5 #ManufacturingHistory
