Mossberg: The Last Family Owned Gun Maker Standing in America
Mossberg. Founded in 1919 by a Swedish immigrant in a rented loft in New Haven, Connecticut. Three employees. No investors. No loans. A fifty-three-year-old man and his two sons building a four-barrel pistol they sold for five dollars. One hundred and seven years later, the company is still family-owned. Fourth generation. Never acquired. Never merged. Never bankrupted. Never sold to private equity. Never changed its name. The Model 500 pump shotgun, introduced in 1961, has sold over eleven million units, making it the most-produced shotgun in history. The 590A1 is the only pump-action shotgun ever to pass the United States military's MIL-SPEC 3443 testing protocol. The 835 Ulti-Mag was the first pump shotgun ever chambered for three-and-a-half-inch shells. The 590 Shockwave created an entire product category that did not exist before Mossberg built it. While Mossberg was doing this, every major competitor around them was destroyed. Remington, founded in 1816, was acquired by Cerberus Capital Management in 2007, filed for bankruptcy twice, and was broken apart in 2020. Colt went bankrupt in 1992 and 2015 and was sold to a Czech conglomerate in 2021. Marlin was dragged through the Remington wreckage and sold to Ruger for thirty million dollars. Winchester is owned by the Walloon regional government of Belgium. Mossberg outlasted all of them. This is how. — O.F. Mossberg & Sons is headquartered in North Haven, Connecticut, with primary manufacturing in Eagle Pass, Texas. The company is the largest pump-action shotgun manufacturer in the world and the oldest family-owned and operated firearms manufacturer in the United States. — SOURCES: Mossberg Official History — 100 Years of Mossberg https://www.mossberg.com/100-years-of...
