This is the story of “Mangbuyeoin,” the Waiting Woman. 📖 [Story] The legend of Mangbuseok is one of Korea’s representative tales of waiting, passed down from long ago. Among the most widely known versions is the story of Park Jesang, a loyal subject of the Silla Kingdom, and his wife. During the reign of King Nulji of Silla, Park Jesang left on a dangerous journey to rescue the king’s brothers, who had been taken as hostages in foreign lands. After rescuing one royal brother from Goguryeo, he could not even return home. He went again to Japan to rescue another royal brother and sent him safely back to Silla. However, Park Jesang himself never returned home. It is said that he lost his life in Japan after refusing to betray his loyalty to Silla. Not knowing this, his wife climbed Chisulryeong Pass and looked toward the sea where her husband had gone. Day after day, she waited for him to return. Even as the wind and rain beat down, even as nights passed and years went by, her waiting never ended. In the end, unable to meet her husband again, she is said to have become Mangbuseok, a stone of waiting, filled with sorrow and han. Mangbuseok is not merely a stone. It is a symbol of love and waiting that even death could not separate, and of an unchanging heart devoted to one person.
