Gilbert, Arkansas info and history: ⭐ Gilbert is a town in Searcy County, Arkansas. ⭐ Population: 26 (2020 U.S. Census). ⭐ Area: about 0.39 sq mi, elevation around 630 feet. ⭐ Founded in 1902 as a railroad construction camp for the Missouri & North Arkansas Railroad (M&NA). ⭐ Named for Charles W. Gilbert, secretary-treasurer of Allegheny Supply Company. ⭐ Early economy: cotton, lumber, grain, and minerals shipped by rail. ⭐ Once home to a railroad repair shop, which closed around 1946; the railroad eventually ceased operations and tracks were removed. ⭐ Survived floods, the Great Depression, and even a proposed dam that could have submerged the town. ⭐ The Gilbert General Store (1901) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ⭐ Located on the Buffalo National River, a hub for floating, fishing, and outdoor recreation. ⭐ Participates in the Buffalo National River Dark Sky Park program to limit light pollution. ⭐ Nicknamed the “coolest town in Arkansas” for its notably low recorded temperatures. ▬▬▬ Hi!
