Officially incorporated in 1954, the community grew directly out of the construction of Bull Shoals Dam, which transformed the White River into Bull Shoals Lake and forever changed the landscape of north-central Arkansas. ⭐ Bull Shoals Dam was completed in 1951 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to control flooding and generate hydroelectric power. ⭐ The town was developed by Charles S. Woods Sr. and his son, who mapped out the community on brown paper bags and divided it into thousands of lots. ⭐ Before its founding, the area was known as Newton Flat, a quiet farming community. ⭐ President Harry S. Truman dedicated the dam on July 2, 1952, marking the beginning of Bull Shoals’ rapid growth. ⭐ The filling of Bull Shoals Lake brought tourism, retirees, and new opportunities, making it a hub for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation. ⭐ Today, Bull Shoals is known for its blend of natural beauty, lake life, and small-town charm—an Ozark destination shaped by its history.
