This Day in History // SADTU Commemorating Youth Day - 16 June, 2023 The Soweto Uprisings: Events as they unfolded on 16 June 1976 Youth Day provides us with the opportunity to take significant steps to promote peace. Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month. This year National Youth Day and Youth Month will be celebrated under the theme: “Accelerating youth economic emancipation for a sustainable future”. What is June 16 Soweto Youth Uprising all about in South Africa? Countdown to conflict: That all changed when the government decreed that instead of learning in English, as most black children were, they would be taught in Afrikaans. Even though the introduction of Afrikaans alongside English as a medium of instruction is considered the immediate cause of the Soweto uprising, there are various factors behind the 1976 student unrest. These factors can be traced back to Dr Hendrik F. Verwoerd, who engineered the Bantu Education Act, and announced “Natives (blacks) must be taught from an early age that equality with Europeans (whites) is not for them”.
