Summer Chanterelles are HERE! Foraging Wild Mushrooms & Plants in June in the PNW
Summer has arrived, and there are plenty of wild edible mushrooms & medicinal plants to forage and discover here in the Pacific Northwest! I was shocked to stumble across Pacific Golden Chanterelles this June (in fact, this was the second year in a row that they crossed my path on June 16th ... seems early, but that just might be the new normal!) We'll also discuss the super unique history of an absolutely incredible medicinal plant known as "Pipsissewa" and discuss it's longtime use in traditional and folk medicines, as well as its ties to the early American soft drink industry... in fact, this one's use in soda pre-dates all of the big commercial brands you've heard of and has a really fascinating story to tell, so sit back, relax, and enjoy! Here's a little bit of what you can expect to see in this episode: 00:00 Intro - apologies for the hiatus! 00:47 Pinesap (Monotropa hypopitys) - one of my favorite mycoheterotrophic plants! 03:32 Pacific Golden Chanterelles in June! (Cantharellus formosus) 07:13 Little Pipissewa (Chimaphila menziesii) 12:43 Checking in on Rupa's patch! Happy Summer Solstice to you all! And thanks so much for joining me out here on the Mushroom Trail. I hope that summer is treating you well, and I look forward to bringing more content to you in the days ahead.
