Road Trip #1240 - US Highway 98 South - Florida Mile 517.4-530.6 | Avon Park In this video, we continue south on US-98 from mile 517.4 near Frostproof, turning onto the Claude Pepper Memorial Highway and joining US-27 South with hidden SR-25 and SR-700. The drive begins near the Sun Ray water tower, crosses from Polk County into Highlands County, and enters Avon Park along the busy US-27 commercial corridor. Along the way, we pass through Florida Heartland scenery, Lake Wales Ridge country, and the northern edge of one of Highlands County’s historic cities. The video concludes at mile 530.6 as we leave the Avon Park city limits. The highway passes through Bartow, the county seat of Polk County, then joins US-17 south toward Fort Meade before turning east again toward Frostproof and the Lake Wales Ridge. From Frostproof, US-98 joins US-27 through Highlands County, passing Avon Park and Sebring along a busy north-south commercial corridor lined with lakes, neighborhoods, and regional destinations. South of Sebring, US-98 breaks away from US-27 and heads east across a more rural stretch of south-central Florida, passing near Sebring International Raceway, Lake Istokpoga, Lorida, Fort Basinger, and the Kissimmee River before reaching Okeechobee. At Okeechobee, US-98 joins US-441 and follows the northern and eastern side of Lake Okeechobee through wide-open agricultural country, with views shaped by canals, sugarcane fields, ranches, and the communities around the lake. The route passes through or near Pahokee, Canal Point, Belle Glade, Wellington, and Royal Palm Beach before becoming Southern Boulevard into the West Palm Beach area. From there, US-98 continues past Palm Beach International Airport, crosses US-1, and reaches the Atlantic side of the state at Palm Beach, completing its long trip across Florida from the Gulf Coast to the ocean.
