For most of its length in Florida, US-98 is signed east–west, serving beach towns, military bases, causeways, and bay bridges between communities like Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Panama City, Mexico Beach, and Apalachicola. When US-98 reaches Perry, its official designation changes to a north–south highway, and from there it heads south in multiplex with other major routes such as US-19 and US-27, continuing down the Gulf side through smaller towns, nature areas, and the northern reaches of the Tampa Bay region. From the Tampa Bay area, US-98 cuts across inland Central Florida, serving as a major connector through communities like Lakeland, Bartow, and Sebring as it threads between lakes, phosphate country, and agricultural areas. South and east of Sebring, the highway turns more decisively eastward across sparsely populated ranchlands and wetlands, eventually reaching the Atlantic Coast at Palm Beach County. In its final stretch, US-98 runs toward its eastern terminus at US-1 in West Palm Beach, tying together Florida’s Gulf Coast, interior heartland, and Atlantic shoreline in a single continuous corridor.
