Road Trip #1241 - US Highway 98 South - Florida Mile 530.6-540.2 | Sebring Road Trip #1241 continues south on US-98, concurrent with US-27, SR-700, and SR-25, from mile 530.6 just outside Avon Park through the west side of Sebring to mile 540.2. This segment follows the Claude Pepper Memorial Highway through Highlands County, moving from a brief rural stretch into Sebring’s busy commercial corridor beside Lake Jackson. Along the way, we pass hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and the junction with SR-17, which follows the older ridge route toward downtown Sebring and Avon Park. We also highlight Sebring’s lakefront setting, historic Circle district, Sebring International Raceway, Highlands Hammock State Park, and other local attractions. The highway passes through Bartow, the county seat of Polk County, then joins US-17 south toward Fort Meade before turning east again toward Frostproof and the Lake Wales Ridge. From Frostproof, US-98 joins US-27 through Highlands County, passing Avon Park and Sebring along a busy north-south commercial corridor lined with lakes, neighborhoods, and regional destinations. South of Sebring, US-98 breaks away from US-27 and heads east across a more rural stretch of south-central Florida, passing near Sebring International Raceway, Lake Istokpoga, Lorida, Fort Basinger, and the Kissimmee River before reaching Okeechobee. At Okeechobee, US-98 joins US-441 and follows the northern and eastern side of Lake Okeechobee through wide-open agricultural country, with views shaped by canals, sugarcane fields, ranches, and the communities around the lake. The route passes through or near Pahokee, Canal Point, Belle Glade, Wellington, and Royal Palm Beach before becoming Southern Boulevard into the West Palm Beach area. From there, US-98 continues past Palm Beach International Airport, crosses US-1, and reaches the Atlantic side of the state at Palm Beach, completing its long trip across Florida from the Gulf Coast to the ocean.
