Alles hat ein Ende im Allgäu: Fernverkehr zwischen Immenstadt und Oberstdorf

I finally made it to Oberstdorf – just in time, when the IC Allgäu and the IC Nebelhorn were still running (more or less). I've been wanting to cover the line from Immenstadt to Oberstdorf for at least a year, but there was always something going on. Sometimes it was just rain, sometimes the signal box broke down, then beavers shut down the line, then there was regular construction work again. The Immenstadt–Oberstdorf line is part of the Illertalbahn – the Iller River flows from Oberstdorf via Immenstadt, Kempten, and Memmingen to Ulm. Along the line, there are not only mountains; there are also many beautiful locations and stations where I was able to document railway operations. In Immenstadt, of course, I filmed the locomotives being switched. In Sonthofen, I filmed the arrival and departure. In Altstädten, I filmed a train crossing. The same thing happened in Fischen, where I was able to film the double-unit train that had previously been on the IC Allgäu on its way to the gas station in Kempten. In Langenwang, I narrowly missed the train. Of course, I was also active at Oberstdorf station, where I was able to document departures and arrivals, as well as shunting operations. And of course, I was also at the level crossing and a few other locations north of Oberstdorf. The star guests in this video are, of course, the Class 218 locomotives, which were still happily doing their job in the summer of 2025. Also present: 🚂 218 406 (with the bib) 🚂 218 415 🚂 218 421 Well, the era of the 1-class ICs is finally coming to an end. And in the Allgäu region, long-distance service with diesel locomotives, as we were used to for many years, is also over. The IC Nebelhorn (coming from Hamburg and split in Augsburg; also called the Kukident Express) has already been discontinued. The ICE L would be a suitable replacement; However, this cannot be split, and there is likely no passenger demand for a block train. The IC Allgäu will continue to operate until mid-2026. After that, it will operate as the ICE Allgäu in the form of the ICE L. The locomotive on the diesel lines will then be a Vectron Dual Mode.
