Today marks the day for the Holambra home to have a place to plant parsley, mint, rosemary, and other aromatic herbs. Together, our gardener Carol Costa and her friend Tatiana Cavaçana from the Pampa Permaculture Institute (IPEP) decided to create a spiral garden bed out of bricks. Besides looking attractive, making harvesting easier, and saving space in the yard, the spiral shape allows for multiple species to grow in the same spot, even those that require different growing conditions. Plants that like more sun and less water, like rosemary, grow in the central, highest part of the spiral and, as a bonus, provide shade for herbs that require moister soil and are more sensitive to heat, like parsley. This makes it easy to always have fresh herbs within reach.
