In this video we show the construction of a spiral bed, step-by-step, to set up a low-maintenance organic vegetable garden. Did you know that a spiral bed allows you to make better use of your space, cultivating a greater variety of species simultaneously? We made this flowerbed in a spiral to have a good variety of vegetables and aromatic herbs available and we chose to set it up close to the entrance of the house so we could have quick and easy access. To build the structure of our site, we reused the bricks left over from the house work. A spiral bed provides several simultaneous microclimates, depending on the position of each plant in the bed. At the top, the soil will always be more drained and plants in this position receive longer exposure to the sun. As we follow the slope towards the base of the bed we will see that the soil will be increasingly humid and the plants in these locations will receive longer periods of shade. To preserve the life of our soil, so that it is not compacted and quickly loses its nutrients, we will form contour lines, a permaculture technique, using banana tree trunks, to prevent rainwater from washing the soil carrying the nutrients, we also cover the entire bed with dry leaves, to form a layer of mulch. To choose which seedlings to plant we need to consider several factors, one of them is our consumption, after all, we need to plant what we consume most, another very important factor is the arrangement according to the levels of the bed and we need to think about creating a synergy between these plants in a way that each one contributes to the development of the others.
