A man assumed the presidency of Mexico for forty-five minutes only to hand power over to the traitor. Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Venustiano Carranza, and Álvaro Obregón — four men who never agreed on anything — united solely to destroy him. The song Mexican children learn in school originated as an insult to his alcoholism. He conspired with the German Empire to invade his own country in exchange for military funding. He was arrested by the army of the very country that had put him in power. And he died alone, imprisoned and ravaged by alcohol in a hospital bed in El Paso, Texas—abandoned by the very Americans who made him president.
