MORS wz. 39 – polski pistolet maszynowy, który spóźnił się na wojnę
The Mors wz. 39 was intended to be the Polish Army's first modern submachine gun. However, it was developed too late, and only a few dozen units were built before the outbreak of war—according to some sources, only 52. In this article, we present the history of this extremely rare Polish design by Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypiński. We examine why the Polish Army underestimated submachine guns for so long, how the Mors fared in comparative trials with the German Erma EMP, and what technical problems hindered the launch of mass production. However, the Mors also featured features ahead of its time: two triggers, a quick-change barrel, a bolt-lock mechanism after the magazine was empty, and an unusual automatic release mechanism. Was it an underdeveloped failure or a promising weapon whose development was interrupted by the war? We also discuss the use of a few Mors during the September Campaign and the four surviving examples of this unique weapon.
