This week we face one of the greatest challenges in the book of Leviticus: the parshats of the leper and the leper. On the surface, these are technical and somewhat daunting parshats that deal with the plagues of leprosy, impurity, and bodily discharges. What does this have to do with the project of a Torah of freedom? In this chapter, we put on the glasses of freedom and discover that leprosy in the Bible is not a medical disease at all – it is a spiritual disease. This is why the Torah sends the leper to the priest and not to the doctor. We will understand that the concept of “impurity” does not describe physical dirt, but rather a “state of impermanence” – a spiritual, emotional, and social disconnection. Through the mysterious rituals of the leper, we are exposed to a brilliant psychological process of healing from trauma. We will learn why the first step to healing is the courage not to hide, but to come out and say “I am sick.” We will talk about the priest's departure "outside the camp" to meet the forbidden, and dive into the ceremony of the two birds - a ceremony that teaches us that in order for our inner bird to fly free, it must first be immersed in the pain and blood of the past.
