We begin a new Pentateuch – the Book of Numbers. Immediately after we finished dealing with the “economy of freedom” in the Book of Leviticus, the Bible moves on to prepare the Israelites for the next challenge: establishing an “army of freedom and responsibility.” The parsha opens with a comprehensive military census, in which over 600,000 qualified warriors are counted. We will learn why it was so important to appoint commanders from within the tribes themselves, and how the order and organization were designed to provide security for a people of freed slaves. But then we come to the exception: the tribe of Levi is exempt from military service. Through the prism of this exemption, we dive straight into the most current debate in Israeli society – the conscription of the ultra-Orthodox. For decades, the ultra-Orthodox leadership has used the argument that they are “like the tribe of Levi.” In this chapter, we break down this argument through the biblical text itself. We will discover that the tribe of Levi did not receive an exemption to "study Torah," but rather to perform the "hard physical labor" and dangerous work of dismantling, carrying, and reassembling the Tabernacle in the wilderness. In addition, we will understand why an exemption based on the genetic lineage of a small tribe (one twelfth of the people) cannot justify a blanket exemption for the masses of young people who choose it today.
