This week we come to Parashat Behalotech, a parasha full of mishnahs, which leads us to one of the most mysterious moments in the Torah: Miriam and Aaron’s criticism of Moses because of “the Cushite woman he took.” To understand what’s happening there, we need to go back a bit. Moses is in a deep leadership crisis. The people complain about the manna and miss the meat pot of Egypt, and Moses simply collapses under the burden and says to God: “I have no more strength to bear this people.” God instructs him to delegate some of his authority and spirit to 70 elders. Through the story of Eldad and Medad, who prophesy in the camp to the displeasure of Joshua, we learn that freedom and responsibility also mean knowing how to release control and not concentrate all the power in ourselves. And then we reach the climax: Miriam’s criticism. According to Chazal, the black woman is a bird. Miriam is essentially criticizing Moses for the fact that since the divine revelation he has disconnected himself from family life, home, and everyday life. In her view, a leader and a spiritual man cannot be disconnected from "going to the supermarket and picking up the children from kindergarten." God agrees with this principle, but explains that Moses is a tragic and unique case - his prophecy is so powerful that he is simply unable to make the transition to everyday life, and he pays for it with immense loneliness.
