Embsay & Bolton Abbey steam train

Today we’re back in beautiful North Yorkshire, just outside Skipton, in the village of Embsay. Join us as we climb aboard Beatrice, a beautiful heritage steam locomotive, for a first-class journey on the award-winning Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. ‪@embsayboltonabbeysteamrailway‬ With coffee in hand, we settle into our carriage and enjoy a relaxing eight-mile round trip through the Yorkshire countryside, a journey that takes around 40 minutes. Our locomotive today, Beatrice (No. 2705), was built in 1945 by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds. She was one of two locomotives built for the Ministry of Supply, although the fate of her sister engine remains unknown. Beatrice was named after the daughter of a colliery manager, giving this hardworking locomotive a rather special personal connection. Our destination is Bolton Abbey Station, which first opened in 1888 as part of the Midland Railway’s Skipton to Ilkley line. After closing in 1965, the station was lovingly restored and reopened in 1998 as the eastern terminus of the volunteer-run, award-winning Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Travelling first class made the experience even more enjoyable. Along with a lovely cup of coffee, we were treated to delicious gingerbread biscuits shaped like little steam trains—a perfect touch for the journey.
