While medieval gardens were primarily characterized by their ability to protect themselves from the threatening outside world, Renaissance gardens were intended to reflect the owner's personality, merging nature and culture into an aesthetic unity. Benedetta Origo is trying to preserve her inherited stately country estate amidst the idyllic hills of the Val d'Orcia as a testament to Tuscan horticultural art for future generations. The property is situated majestically on a hill. It was built in the 15th century and later expanded to include a stately garden. Benedetta opens the grounds to the public once a week. She also regularly organizes art exhibitions and concerts in the summer. Gardener Andrea Mati combines tradition with individualism. He not only realizes foreign country dreams. On the grounds of his nursery, he is building a Teatro di Verzura, a theater made of plants. The concept of this special garden installation originated in 18th-century Italy. Andrea uses it not only as a model garden for potential customers but also to perform music he composes himself. Antonio and Benedetta Perazzi have fulfilled their very own country dream at the old family estate. On over one hectare of land near Lamole, a small village in the Chianti region, the couple has gathered a verdant kingdom with plants from all over the world. They pursue the idea of a cosmopolitan garden. Antonio and Benedetta embrace the idea that modern humanity is highly mobile and influenced by cultures from all over the world. A contemporary garden should reflect this idea while simultaneously providing a retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Coccia family has rediscovered traditional farming life as their rural dream. Ezio Coccia worked for 17 years as a gardener for the Romanian queen, who had a country estate near Siena.
