Kreuzfahrtschiff festgefahren auf Rhein Höhe Bonner Oper am 16.07.26 + O-Ton

On July 16, 2026, at approximately 9:05 a.m., the Bonn Fire Department was alerted to an incident on the Rhine near the opera house. Around 7:00 a.m., the cruise ship "Thurgau Gold" had become stuck stern-first on a sandbank during docking maneuvers due to low water levels. All attempts to free the ship independently had failed, leaving the 135-meter-long and 11.40-meter-wide hotel ship lying bow-first in the Rhine, pointing upstream towards the center of the river. All 75 guests and 40 crew members on board were unharmed. Among others, the crew of the rescue pumper from Fire Station 2 manned both multi-purpose boats (MZB) since the fireboat was currently out of service. They assessed the situation and secured the Rhine until the arrival of the water police. There was initial talk of using the event ship "Poseidon" to tow the vessel free, but this was ultimately not attempted. Ships were able to pass the incident site at reduced speed. Around 3:00 PM, the MZB (Multi-Purpose Boat) was remanned. Around 4:15 PM, the cargo ship "Sardius" arrived and was able to tow the vessel free after about an hour. However, it immediately ran aground again, requiring another attempt to free it, which was completed around 6:00 PM. It was then towed to a landing stage near the Post Tower. Only a few ships traveling upstream were allowed to pass temporarily. It was then towed to the Niehl harbor, arriving around 11:30 PM. The following units were involved in the operation: the B-Service (Emergency Response Unit), the Press Service, the HLF (Heavy Rescue Pumper), the Crew Transport Vehicle 2, the MZB, the patrol boat Wiking Bonn, and the traffic safety vessel Bonn from the Cologne Waterways and Shipping Authority. According to press spokesman Heiko Basten, the FW 2 was not staffed by the volunteer fire department, even though the operation lasted several hours on both occasions. The ship, operated by Thurgau Travel and sailing under the Swiss flag, is a premium river cruise ship built in 2023, featuring 87 cabins and four suites. It can accommodate a total of 182 passengers and 40 crew members.
