Tax relief for the middle class was coming. Electricity prices would fall for everyone. On March 24, 2026, Merz stated verbatim in the Bundestag that the federal government was ruling nothing out. What a 21 percent VAT rate actually costs: A single person would pay €25 more per month. A family with two children would pay €50, or €600 per year. A retired couple would pay €30 more. Basic foodstuffs would remain at the reduced 7 percent rate. Everything else would become more expensive. What the middle class would actually get: For a gross income of €4,000 in tax bracket 1, this translates to €9 more net per month. This calculation comes from Stiftung Warentest (a German consumer organization). If the VAT increase is implemented, this will result in a net increase in income.
