It's defined as a single-person household with a net income of €1,930 to €3,600 per month (core middle class). Since 1995, its size has shrunk from 70% to around 63%. Young adults aged 18-29 are particularly affected. The OECD report "Taxing Wages 2026" shows that the average single person in Germany pays 49.3 percent of their gross income in taxes and social security contributions – that's almost half. This puts Germany in second place among OECD countries, right behind Belgium. The OECD average is 34.9 percent, which is 14.4 percentage points lower than Germany's. Specifically: Someone earning €4,000 gross per month has approximately €2,624 net (single person, tax bracket I, 2026). The employee pays around €1,376 in income tax plus social security contributions. The employer pays an additional €800 in social security contributions – the actual labor costs for the workplace amount to €4,800. The tax wedge according to the OECD method is 45.3% in this example, while the OECD report for 2026 for average single income is even higher at 49.3%. Plus, there's a 19% value-added tax (VAT) on consumption. The situation is different abroad. Spain: 40% tax burden for single individuals. Portugal: NHR program: 20% flat tax for 10 years for new tax residents.
