Die Scilly-Inseln | Leben auf den Inseln der Queen, Folge 3/9

In the middle of the Gulf Stream, almost 50 kilometers southwest of Land's End, the southernmost point in Great Britain, lie the Isles of Scilly: 140 islands, some of them tiny, of which only five are inhabited. Turquoise seas, stunning natural landscapes, and subtropical temperatures make them England's sunny paradise. Prince Charles and members of the royal family enjoy visiting them. The approximately 2,200 inhabitants of the Isles of Scilly wouldn't want to live anywhere else, despite the higher cost of living and lower wages than on the mainland. Over the centuries, the Scillonians have shown amazing ingenuity in securing an income on the remote islands. Many have multiple occupations, working as musicians and cooks, winemakers and lobstermen, carpenters and shipwreck hunters. The reefs and currents off the Isles of Scilly were considered the most dangerous in the world and were the downfall of many ships. More than 800 have sunk here, some of which have never been found. It's a paradise for divers and adventurers. The archipelago's greatest claim to fame is a police station on the main island of St. Mary's. Sergeant Colin Taylor made it known worldwide with his hilarious Facebook posts and a highly entertaining book. Another highlight is the exotic Abbey Garden on the island of Tresco. It is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in England, with over 20,000 flowers and palm trees from the most remote corners of the earth. #wocomoTRAVEL #BritishIsles Original title: The Queen's Islands © Licensed by Berlin Producers
