The Shetland Islands are the northernmost of all the Royal Isles. The climate is rainy and windy, the sea rough and dangerous. Of the approximately 100 islands, only 16 are inhabited. Behind thick stone walls, amidst colorful flowers and bushes, James B. Thomason paints a picture of the world a hundred years ago, when the islanders still lived off the fishing trade. Jackie Murray coaches the women's rugby team in Lerwick in all kinds of weather and jumps in when the Royal Coastguard's lifeboat is called out to an emergency. The melodies of his band are a source of cheer for instrument maker Kenny Johnson during the long winter months. And Raymond Henderson, working for the Royal Mail, ensures that letters and parcels reach even the northernmost regions. The Shetland Islands' natural environment is virtually untouched; the rocks of this treeless landscape are among the oldest geological formations on Earth. During the summer months, thousands of puffins nest in the cliffs, and orcas hunt seals. Nature photographers Richard Shucksmith and Brydon Thomason have studied the lives of the otters, which are particularly easy to observe here. From the thick fleece of Shetland sheep, Elizabeth Johnston spins fine wool for the famous Fair Isle sweaters, which are also worn by the Royal Family.
