Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that the development of 137,000 hectares of agricultural land through the rice field creation and land optimization (oplah) program in Papua is intended for the community, especially indigenous Papuans, to strengthen food self-sufficiency and improve the welfare of farmers. This was conveyed by Minister Amran during a rice planting session with farmers in Waninggap Kai Village, Merauke, South Papua, on Saturday (July 4, 2026). He stated that the government's program has provided tangible benefits, marked by increased community income and high enthusiasm for the development of new rice fields. By 2026, the government had developed 83,030 hectares of rice fields and 54,399 hectares of land optimization in Papua, with South Papua being the largest development center, with nearly 100,000 hectares. Minister Amran ensured that the government will continue to strengthen the development of food zones in Papua through support for mechanization, superior seeds, irrigation, food brigades, and farmer mentoring. This program has also driven increases in the cropping index, productivity, rice production, and farmer income. South Papua Governor Apolo Safanpo expressed his full support for the development of South Papua as a new national food barn, in line with the vision of achieving sustainable food security.
