Mochikura Mine was located in Aga Town, Higashikanbara District, Niigata Prefecture (formerly Mikawa Village, Higashikanbara District). Developed as a silver mine around the 17th century, the mine is said to have been closed frequently. In modern times, in 1902 (Meiji 35), Terada Sukematsu of what is now Shibata City discovered copper deposits while mining fluorite. The following year, he obtained a mining permit and sold it to Koide Junta of what is now Gosen City. The smelter was originally located on the banks of the Agano River in Isojima Village, but in 1908 (Meiji 41), it was relocated to its current location along with its office. The current brick office building is said to have been built in 1913 (Taisho 2). The mine's peak was from the end of the Meiji period through the Taisho period, with annual production of nearly 100,000 tons in 1918 (Taisho 7). Due to resource depletion, the mine was temporarily closed in the mid-Taisho period, but it appears to have been used as a fluorite storage facility from the Showa period through the war. The remains of an office made of "karami bricks," made from waste materials produced during the copper refining process, remain like an ancient ruin, with the roof collapsed and only the walls remaining. The remains of a smelter can also be seen on the opposite bank of the river. Depending on the season, there are dangers from bears, bees, and leeches, and even the roads accessible by vehicle are in very poor condition, making access difficult without a light four-wheel drive vehicle.
