Hannah Arendt: ihr politisches Denken & das Böse

What did Hannah Arendt mean by the “banality of evil”—and why does her political thought continue to shape debates about power, freedom, and responsibility? In the second of two parts, philosopher and Arendt biographer Thomas Meyer, whose book on Arendt became a Spiegel bestseller, discusses the fundamental concepts of her thought. While Part 1 focused on her biography, this part shifts the focus to her work and concepts: from “Eichmann in Jerusalem” and the much-discussed thesis of the banality of evil, to her analysis of totalitarianism in “The Origins of Totalitarianism,” and on to “The Human Condition.” At the heart of this discussion are Arendt’s distinction between labor, production, and action; her concepts of plurality and natality; her understanding of the political and the public sphere; and the difference between power and violence. The discussion also explores the relationship between thinking, willing, and judging, the power of judgment developed in conjunction with Kant, and “thinking without a banister.” Using the example of the "desk murderer" Eichmann, the conversation explores Arendt's provocative diagnosis of thoughtlessness as the source of evil—and why this very finding triggered the scandal surrounding her book. The discussion also delves into why Arendt considered herself a political theorist rather than a philosopher, and what her analysis of totalitarianism means for the present day. A rich portrait of a thinker straddling philosophy and political theory—and a plea for Arendt's concept of "presence": to closely examine one's own time and to think for oneself. 👉 Part 1 (Biography):    • Hannah Arendt: Leben einer Jahrhundertdenk...   Part 1 covers Hannah Arendt's life journey from Königsberg through Parisian exile to New York—Part 2 picks up directly where that left off with her thought.
