In this first of two parts, the philosopher and Arendt biographer ๐๐ซ๐จ๐. ๐๐ซ. Meyer discusses the life of Arendt and her workโand the close intertwining of her life and work, which Arendt herself captured with the concept of "presence." Based on previously unseen archival material, Meyer corrects widespread myths: from her actual birthplace of Linden near Hanover, to her Jewish-bourgeois origins in Kรถnigsberg, to her being the only external student to graduate from a Protestant boys' grammar school. Meyer discusses the close intertwining of Arendt's life and work, which Arendt herself captured with the concept of "presence." The book covers her studies with Martin Heidegger, Rudolf Bultmann, and Karl Jaspers, her dissertation on Augustine's concept of love, and her turn to Jewish emancipation and Rahel Varnhagen. It also addresses her politicization after 1933, her work for Youth Aliyah in Paris, her internment in the Gurs internment camp, and her escape via Spain and Portugal into exileโculminating in her rise to prominence as a "New York intellectual" associated with the journal "Aufbau" and the New School for Social Research. The backdrop to this narrative includes antisemitism at Weimar-era universities, Walter Benjamin's suicide at the border, her lifelong friendship with Mary McCarthy, and the beginnings of her analysis of totalitarianism ("The Origins of Totalitarianism," 1951). Meyer also discusses Arendt's understanding of Jewish identityโfor example, in her later break with Gershom Scholem and his accusation of the lack of "Ahavat Israel"โher first permanent professorship only in 1967/68, and her return to Germany from 1950 onward in the service of Jewish Cultural Reconstruction. A rich portrait amidst persecution, emigration, and intellectual self-assertion. The second part then focuses on her thought.
