From Small Things: Episode 48: New Vintage Quilts

Welcome back! This week, I have 3 new vintage quilts to share: two that have been gifted to me, and one that I'm beginning to piece. I am still focusing on hand quilting, and am making good progress, so I have less to show in the way of piecing this week. I've chosen a pattern for my next quilt, which will be made with vintage fabrics from my collection. So far, I've made two test blocks and am happy with them; I have cut into my fabrics, and have lots of HSTs made. These should come together quickly. I've also continued work on my pinwheels over the last week. I have sewed more fabric to my Star Singles papers, and have trimmed a big stack of them, but I won't cut them apart until I'm ready to join them into pinwheels. My sister also sent me some strips of bright fabrics, already cut to 6 1/2", to add to my pinwheel quilt! Most of what I have to share this week is acquisitions... again! One friend of mine wanted to get rid of some large cuts of quilting fabric, as well as a large bag of wool fabric. I couldn't turn that down! Another friend, who is a skilled quilter, has decided that she is going to step away from quilting and focus on knitting at this point. This means that she is going through her sewing room, and getting rid of some things! She dropped off three bags of fabric, including some orphan blocks, and two beautiful old quilts. The first is a yo-yo quilt, large size and in excellent condition. This one is a great example of what I think of as "vintage" fabrics, though I don't know how old it is. It has an interesting detail around the edges. The other is a crazy quilt-- absolutely gorgeous, dated 1891. I'll share a close look at some of the beautiful stitching details on this treasure. I hope you're making steady progress in your sewing room this week!
