From Small Things: Episode 60: Stitches Per Inch

Welcome back! This week, I wanted to share some more thoughts on hand quilting. I often see, in the quilting world, 14 stitches per inch held up as an ideal in hand quilting. I wanted to share some thoughts on this; reflections on my own stitch length, factors which can influence your hand quilting, and the pros and cons of measuring your work against such a high standard. Most importantly, I want to encourage anyone interested in trying hand quilting to do so: do not let that number deter you, or make you feel that your work isn't good enough. As long as you enjoy it, that's what matters; your stitches will hold your quilt together even if they aren't tiny. In my sewing room this week, I have started piecing together rows for my row quilt. I have made several, with several different types of blocks, and I'll share how it's coming together. As I make a row, I add a sashing strip to it right away. I still have a pile of blocks to play with, to decide which of them will make it into the quilt, and I have another box of things which have been rejected as not a good fit for this one.
