Oleander (Nerium oleander) is a shrub native to the Mediterranean basin and is now widely used as an ornamental plant in cities around the world. Indeed, oleander is one of the most abundant plants in cities with warm, Mediterranean climates, and very likely the most used shrub in urban landscaping in these cities, as it is highly valued for its extreme hardiness, its beautiful and abundant flowers, and its prolonged flowering period, which can extend from spring to autumn. Despite its great beauty, one must be very careful when approaching and handling oleanders, as they are highly poisonous. The entire plant (leaves, flowers, stems, roots, and sap) contains cardiac glycosides that are deadly to humans and animals if ingested. Besides their widespread presence in parks, roundabouts, and urban gardens of all kinds, oleanders are also very common in highway medians, where they serve to create living hedges and reduce glare from headlights between lanes.
