Selbstbestimmt leben mit Behinderung | Die Wohnschule (2/2) | Reportage | SRF
Independent living with a disability is possible thanks to the Pro Infirmis residential school. People with disabilities learn to live independently there. Janine Zobrist and Joël Hofstetter are just one example. They attend the residential school and dream of living in their own apartment despite their cognitive impairment. This two-part report follows them on their journey to independent living for a year. Janine Zobrist and Joël Hofstetter are getting closer to their big dream: They will soon be living in their own apartment. What is a given for most people, Janine and Joël had to learn at the Pro Infirmis residential school because of their cognitive impairment. Over the course of three years, Janine Zobrist and Joël Hofstetter gradually acquired all the skills and competencies they need to realize their dream at the Pro Infirmis residential school, run by the disability organization. The training focuses on household management, self-care and interaction with others, leisure activities, and everyday administrative tasks. Social workers lead the theoretical and practical classes. Classes take place in the afternoon. In the mornings, the residential school students work away from home in specialized companies: Janine Zobrist at the St. Jakob Bakery in Zurich and Joël Hofstetter at the social institution ZüriWerk. The residential school is supported by the Canton of Zurich. Tuition fees are CHF 3,600 per month. The residential school students finance this amount with IV funds and supplementary benefits. Reporter Patrick Schellenberg accompanied Janine Zobrist and Joël Hofstetter with his camera for a year. Both have now successfully completed the first part of the residential school. They live in their own apartments, but will continue to receive regular visits and coaching from the residential school's social workers during the follow-up phase.
