He suffered from stomach aches, could barely sleep at night, and felt overwhelmed in class. "He was a miserable mess," says his mother. In her view, he received too little support for his learning difficulties at the public school. The pressure was a burden on the whole family. Finally, she opted to use an inheritance to finance a private school for him – a school without grades or performance pressure. Pan is a father of three and used to teach at a public school. He found working in the classroom unbearable and wanted to provide his three children with a different learning environment. The children learn outdoors in all kinds of weather, freely pursuing their interests. In Switzerland, around 5 percent of school-age children attend private schools. Interest in alternatives is growing – the number of private schools has increased by half in the last 10 years. The costs for private schools in Switzerland vary considerably depending on the school, region, and program. The schools featured in the report cost parents between 1,150 and 2,180 Swiss francs per child per month. 00:00 Intro 01:26 Visit to the Forest School 07:40 Are children adequately prepared here? 09:04 Gian was overwhelmed in elementary school 13:44 Private school lessons with Gian 18:09 Do private schools jeopardize inclusion? 20:05 Why did Aaron's parents choose a private school? 32:06 Donat's conclusion _____________________________________________ ▪ A film by Donat Hofer ▪ Senior Producers: Vanessa Nikisch, Ilona Stämpfli ▪ Director: Anita Richner _____________________________________________ This is «rec.»: «rec.» stands for «record».
