Getting the Relationship Right: Following Jesus When Obedience Is Hard

Following Jesus is not easy, and Hebrews reminds us that obedience often means choosing hardship over comfort. In this sermon from Hebrews 10–12, Pastor Jason explains that every Christian faces daily decision points between costly obedience and comfortable disobedience. The Christian life is a long race, and following Jesus means enduring hardship with our eyes fixed on Him. Hebrews 11 shows that God’s people have always endured by faith: believing that God tells the truth, even when His promises are not yet fully seen. That faith produces hope, because God has promised eternal life, resurrection, reconciliation, and joy in His presence. Like a runner pressing toward the finish line, Christians can endure present pain because of the joy set before them. But faith and hope are not the only motivators. Hebrews 12 calls us to look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. When we see the beauty, glory, and surpassing worth of Christ, the temporary comforts of sin begin to lose their power. Those who follow Christ endure hardship by faith, hope, and love.
